ABOUT
K-ILLITE
K-illite is a natural mineral buried widely across the Andong City and Bonghwa-gun regions in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in Korea.
It’s quite similar to sericite but compared to sericite, K-illite contains more mineral substances and germanium. Unlike sericite which has a light greyish and light greenish color, K-illite has a unique reddish color.
Also, compared to sericite, K-illite contains more silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3)and various more minerals. However, it’s an eco-friendly mineral that doesn’t contain any toxic heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium and lead etc.
K-illite can be mostly found in the space where the granitic layer formed from the volcanic activity during the Proterozoic Era(approximately 2500 million years to 570 million years ago) and the quartzitic layer formed during the Paleozoic Era(approximately 580 million years to 225 million years ago) overlap.
The K-illite deposit is one of the hydrothermal deposits which are created as hydrothermal water released from magma rises and the minerals in that water settle.
During the process in which hydrothermal deposits are formed, hydrothermal alteration or changes in the mineralogic composition of a rock, such as silicification, chloritization, carbonatization, sericitization and siallitizationoccurs. And among them, it is estimated that sericitization was the strongest alteration which made the K-illite deposit to form.
K-illite is buried in a hard form like red sandstone. K-illite is very rare minerals in Korea, and also one of the very rare minerals that is only found in a few countries worldwide.
